Freeze-dried cosmetic beads for stable, preservative-free active ingredient delivery

How lyophilization is bringing precision, stability, and clean-beauty positioning to skincare actives — from vitamin C and hyaluronic acid to peptides and collagen.

Many of the most effective cosmetic actives are also among the most unstable. Vitamin C oxidises rapidly in water. Peptides degrade with heat, light, and exposure. Retinol loses potency when mixed with incompatible ingredients. Hyaluronic acid formulations require preservatives to prevent microbial growth in aqueous form. Collagen and growth factors are highly sensitive to temperature and pH. Anyone who has formulated with these ingredients knows the workarounds: preservatives, antioxidants, opaque packaging, refrigeration — each adding cost, complexity, and often ingredients that conflict with the clean-beauty positioning the brand is trying to achieve.

Conventional cosmetic formulations address active ingredient instability with chemistry stacked on top of chemistry. Preservative systems keep aqueous formulations microbially stable. Chelators, antioxidants, and pH buffers slow oxidation. Airless pumps and opaque packaging limit exposure to light and air. Cold-chain distribution and refrigerated storage keep temperature-sensitive ingredients viable.

Every one of these workarounds adds ingredients to the label, cost to the supply chain, and constraints to product positioning. For brands developing on clean-beauty, preservative-free, or waterless credentials, the constraints are especially sharp. The active ingredient itself is often the smallest part of the formulation — the majority is the machinery required to keep it stable in water.

The instability problem in cosmetic formulation

Water is the driver of most of these instability mechanisms. It is the medium in which oxidation happens, the environment microbes require, the vehicle through which incompatible ingredients interact. Remove it, and the formulation problem changes shape entirely.

Freeze-drying — lyophilization — is the process of removing water from a formulation under controlled temperature and pressure, without the thermal damage that ordinary drying would cause. The result is a dry, stable, precisely dosed matrix that holds the active ingredient in its peak-potency state until water is reintroduced at the point of use.

A freeze-dried cosmetic bead therefore does something a liquid formulation cannot:

  • Needs no preservatives. Without water, there is nothing to support microbial growth.

  • Stores at ambient temperature. No refrigeration, no cold chain, no dry ice in distribution.

  • Maintains potency until the moment of use. The active is sealed in its dry, stable form until dissolution.

  • Delivers a fresh, single dose every time. Each bead is a self-contained unit — no accumulated oxidation from repeated opening of multi-use packaging.

  • Dissolves instantly. Add water, serum, or carrier and the bead releases its active content in seconds.

What removing the water changes

What EVIK™ LyoPearl are

EVIK™ LyoPearl are preformulated, freeze-dried cosmetic lyobeads containing active skincare ingredients in a highly stable, preservative-free bead format. Each LyoPearl is a single-dose unit of a cosmetic active — lyophilized at peak potency and sealed until use, then dissolved instantly in water, serum, or a carrier formula.

Developed by Evik Diagnostics and built on more than 15 years of freeze-dry bead expertise across diagnostics and life sciences, LyoPearl brings the precision lyophilization technology used in molecular diagnostic reagents to cosmetic and skincare formulation.

Almost any water-sensitive cosmetic active can be lyophilized, but the formats that have proven most valuable in commercial cosmetic development are those covering the highest-instability, highest-value ingredients. EVIK™ LyoPearl is available in each of the following ingredient formats.

Hyaluronic acid

High- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, lyophilized for maximum hydration delivery. Preservative-free, instantly dissolved, fresh-dose moisture at every application. Removes the preservative load that aqueous HA formulations require to prevent microbial growth.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)

One of the most potent and most unstable cosmetic actives. Liquid vitamin C formulations begin oxidising the moment they are opened, losing measurable potency within days. Lyophilization protects the ascorbic acid until the bead is dissolved, delivering full-potency antioxidant and brightening activity at every use.

Collagen

Marine- or plant-derived collagen peptides, lyophilized to preserve their native structure and bioactivity. Supports skin firmness and elasticity without the stabiliser load required in liquid collagen formulations.

Active peptides

Signal peptides, carrier peptides, neurotransmitter peptides, and biomimetic peptides — including anti-wrinkle, collagen-stimulating, and skin-brightening formats. Each peptide type is available in a dedicated LyoPearl format, preserving the specific bioactivity that makes peptides valuable in cosmetic formulation.

Custom actives

Retinol, niacinamide, growth factors, botanical extracts, enzymes, probiotics, and other temperature-sensitive or water-incompatible actives are available in custom LyoPearl formats. Almost any active with an instability profile that limits its shelf life in an aqueous formulation is a candidate for lyophilization.

Common actives available in cosmetic lyobead format

For cosmetic brand developers, formulators, and contract manufacturers, the freeze-dried bead format opens up product architectures that liquid formulation cannot support.

  • Premium serums and ampoules. Single-use LyoPearl beads dissolved by the consumer at point of use, delivering maximum-potency actives in a format that commands premium positioning.

  • Two-component systems. LyoPearl bead paired with a liquid activator in dual-chamber packaging — the active is never exposed to water until the moment of application.

  • Anti-aging targeted treatments. Concentrated peptide, retinol, collagen, and vitamin C beads for spot treatment and intensive application formats.

  • Eye area treatments. Precisely dosed micro-volume beads (0.05–0.1 mL per bead) designed for the periorbital area — under-eye peptide serums, retinol treatments, growth factor formulations.

  • Lip care actives. Micro-dose lip plumping, hydration, and treatment beads in single-use format.

  • Travel and sample sizes. No liquid, no leakage, no volume restriction for air travel, no compromised potency from repeated opening — ideal for travel formats and sampling programmes.

  • Clean-beauty and preservative-free positioning. For brands developing on natural, free-from, or waterless credentials, the format eliminates the preservatives required in aqueous formulations — without compromising active-ingredient potency.

What the end consumer experiences

For the consumer, a freeze-dried cosmetic bead delivers something a liquid serum cannot: fresh, peak-potency active at every application. Drop one bead into water, serum, or a damp palm; it dissolves in seconds into a smooth, skin-ready formula. No preservatives, no accumulated oxidation from an opened bottle, no guesswork about the dose. And no liquid to declare at airport security.

The standard EVIK™ LyoPearl range covers the highest-demand ingredients, but the format is inherently flexible. Custom excipient formulations, specific dosing volumes, novel active ingredients, and GMP-manufactured supply for commercial cosmetic products are available through Evik Diagnostics' Lyobead contract development and manufacturing services.
