Features of Lyophilized Beads: 8 Reasons Freeze-Dried Beads Outperform Liquid Formulas

features of lyophilized beads

Lyophilized beads turn a liquid formula into a small, dry sphere that holds one exact dose and stays stable until the moment it is used. Whether a bead carries enzymes for a diagnostic test or vitamin C for a skincare routine, the core features of lyophilized beads are the same: room-temperature stability, precise dosing, fast dissolution and far less waste.

At Evik, we manufacture EVIK™ DxSpheres for diagnostic assays and EVIK™ LyoPearl freeze-dried skincare beads, and we develop custom bead formats for customers around the world. Below are the features that make the format worth switching to — and what each one means for your product.

What Are Lyophilized Beads?

Often called lyobeads, they are small freeze-dried spheres made from precise droplets of a liquid formula. Each droplet is frozen, then dried under vacuum so the ice turns straight to vapor. What remains is a solid bead holding every active component in a dry, stable form.

Our standard beads are made from dispensed volumes of 5–30 µL and measure 2 to 4 mm across. Projects outside that range can be developed — our freeze-dried cosmetic beads, for example, carry unit doses of under 0.2 mL.

8 Key Features of Lyophilized Beads

1. Room-Temperature Stability

Removing water takes away the medium in which many degradation reactions happen, so the beads can be stored without a freezer. Our diagnostic lyobeads offer a shelf life of 24+ months at 15–30°C, and our freeze-dried skincare actives — including retinol, peptides and vitamins C and E — are stabilized without cold storage. Fewer expired or degraded materials also means less waste.

2. Precise, Pre-Measured Dosing

Every bead holds one exact dose. In the lab, pre-measured beads eliminate pipetting errors and put uniform reagent quantities into every reaction. In skincare, a single bead delivers the same concentration at every application, with no guesswork.

3. Fast Dissolution

Diagnostic lyobeads reconstitute in under a minute with a simple buffer or the sample itself, with complete reagent recovery and no loss of activity. Skincare beads dissolve almost instantly when mixed with water or a serum.

4. Simpler Shipping and Storage

No cold chain means standard-temperature shipping without dry ice, less freezer and refrigerator space, and lower costs across the supply chain.

5. Consistent, Reproducible Results

Uniform beads produce uniform results, including across different lab operators. Our manufacturing process delivers excellent batch-to-batch reproducibility and complete traceability, and our analytical testing covers residual moisture, bead dimensions, mechanical properties and functional performance against your specifications.

6. Fewer Steps and Less Contamination Risk

Because one bead already contains all the reaction components, labs skip preparation steps, saving time and cutting the contamination risk that comes with every extra handling step. In skincare, sealed single doses avoid repeated dipping into a jar.

7. Preservative-Free Skincare Formulas

With no water in the product, freeze-dried skincare does not depend on preservatives. Our cosmetic beads are preservative-free and dye-free.

8. Compact, Device-Ready Formats

Small, robust millimeter-scale beads fit into vials, tubes, microwell plates, microfluidic cartridges and custom devices, which makes them well suited to point-of-care testing in resource-limited settings. In skincare, the same portability means compact single-dose packs for travel and sampling.

Lyophilized Beads vs. Liquid Formulations

Factor Liquid formulation Freeze-dried bead
Storage Often refrigerated or frozen Dry, at room temperature
Shipping Cold chain, often with dry ice for frozen reagents Standard-temperature shipping
Dosing Measured by pipette, pump or dropper Pre-measured in every bead
Preparation Thawing, mixing and pipetting Add buffer, sample, water or serum
Sensitive actives Many degrade over time in water Protected in dry form until use
Waste Expired or degraded stock is discarded Use one bead at a time

Where Lyobeads Make the Biggest Difference

Diagnostic Assays: EVIK™ DxSpheres

EVIK™ DxSpheres are our lyophilized reagent beads for diagnostic testing. Our team can transfer most molecular, immunoassay and protein assay components into a single-reaction bead — from enzymes, primers and probes to antibodies, conjugates, colloidal gold and fluorescent or magnetic particles.

We supply DxSpheres in bulk for in-house assembly, or integrated into custom devices and microfluidic or biosensor cartridges. Our customers serve human research and IVD, veterinary, agricultural and environmental testing markets.

Skincare: EVIK™ LyoPearl

EVIK™ LyoPearl brings the same technology to skincare. The current lineup includes LyoPearl Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), LyoPearl Collagen and LyoPearl Hyaluronic Acid — each a single-dose bead lyophilized at peak potency and sealed dry until it is dissolved at the moment of application.

How We Manufacture Lyophilized Beads

Turning a liquid formula into a reliable bead is a development project as much as a production run. Every project follows the same path:

  1. Formulation compatibility assessment. We determine whether your components are suitable for lyophilization.
  2. Prototype development. We take your concept from proof of concept to working beads.
  3. Process optimization and validation. Freeze-drying parameters are tuned to your formula and validated.
  4. Pilot production. Small lots let you test the market before you scale.
  5. Commercial-scale manufacturing. Capacity ranges from 1,000 to 300,000 lyobeads per day, with technology transfer from R&D to production.

Production takes place in our ISO 13485:2016-certified facility under GMP, with an ultra-low humidity environment that keeps residual moisture low. Our team has experience with light-sensitive, temperature-sensitive and viscous components, as well as microparticle suspensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are lyophilized beads?

They are small freeze-dried spheres that hold a precise dose of a formula, such as diagnostic reagents or skincare actives, in a dry, stable form until they are dissolved for use.

What are the main features of lyophilized beads?

Room-temperature stability, pre-measured dosing, fast dissolution, simpler shipping and storage, reproducible results, fewer handling steps and compact, device-ready formats. Skincare beads can also be made preservative-free.

How long do the beads last?

Our diagnostic lyobeads offer a shelf life of 24+ months at room temperature (15–30°C). Shelf life for other products depends on the formula, so always follow the product's labeling.

How quickly do the beads dissolve?

Diagnostic lyobeads reconstitute in under a minute with buffer or sample. Skincare beads dissolve almost instantly in water or serum.

What sizes can you make?

Our standard beads come from 5–30 µL dispensed volumes and measure 2–4 mm in diameter. Larger formats, such as cosmetic unit doses under 0.2 mL, can be developed.

Can you turn my formula into beads?

In most cases, yes. We start with a formulation compatibility assessment, then move through prototype development, validation and pilot production.

Do you offer packaging and assembly?

Yes. We supply beads in bulk, or place them into vials, tubes, microwell plates and custom cartridges packed in protective foil pouches with desiccant. Skincare beads can be prepackaged in single-dose, travel and sample-size formats.

Put the Features of Lyophilized Beads to Work for Your Product

The bead format makes products more stable, more precise and easier to ship and use — in the lab and in the bathroom cabinet. If your formula depends on sensitive components, the bead format may be the upgrade it needs.

To get started, send us:

  • Your formula or active components
  • Your target application (diagnostic assay, device or skincare)
  • Bead size or dose requirements
  • Estimated volumes and timeline
